Real {Ethiopian} weddings: Elsa and Tom

It’s my pleasure to feature a lovely couple from my own backyard (Toronto – woot! woot!)
I’ve known Elsa for a few years so I was delighted when she agreed to let me feature her wedding for  Mushirit readers.

Elsa originally hails from Ethiopia and works in spa services. She is also an impressive songstress – check out one of my favourite songs of hers here. Her groom Tom is from Hong Kong and works in engineering.

This spunky couple celebrated their multicultural nuptials in a 3-day celebration (October 14-16 2011). For the festivities, she also wore 3 spectacular dresses (a white gown, a Chinese traditional dress, and an Ethiopian dress/kemis). Can we just marvel at how beautiful her dresses are?! So elegant.

Habesha kemis: hunting for inspiration

In preparation for day 2 of my wedding festivities known as “Melse,” I have been looking for habesha kemis online. I remain largely unimpressed with what I’ve found online. Where can I buy stylish Ethiopian dresses online? I’m sure I’m not the only Mushirit out there who is asking…unfortunately I don’t have the finances to fly back to Ethiopia just to shop for dresses for me and my bridesmaids.

I was completely discouraged until one of my bridesmaids told me about a Facebook page owned by a young beautiful Ethiopian designer by the name of Senait Abraham.
